👋 Hey there,

Welcome back to AccioAdmit Weekly, your high-value, no-fluff guide to making confident MBA decisions. This week, we're cutting straight to the chase on Letters of Recommendation (LORs)- a crucial component that can make or break your R1 application.

It's July, and September R1 deadlines are accelerating. There's no time for generic advice. This is your 10-point, ultra-actionable guide to securing powerful recommendations, starting today.

🎯 Why Your Recommenders Are Application Game-Changers

Your LORs provide objective, third-party validation of your potential. AdComs want concrete evidence that you possess the skills you claim. A strong LOR from the right person, packed with specific examples, is your secret weapon.

🫂 Who to Ask?

Choosing your A-team is paramount. Here's exactly what to do:

I) Identify Your "Advocates": Don't just pick a title. Choose individuals who:
Have directly supervised you for at least 6-12 months.
Can speak to your qualifications, work ethic, and leadership with specific, recent examples.
Are genuinely enthusiastic about your MBA journey and willing to dedicate time.
Are senior to you (ideal: current/former direct manager).

II) Founders & Family Business? Act Strategically:
🔵 NEVER ask a family member.
🔵 DO ask: A non-family board member, a significant client, a key investor, or a senior non-family employee who oversees your work. They must provide an objective, professional perspective.

III) Academic References (When & How):
👉 Only if: You're a recent graduate (less than 2-3 years out), or the professor supervised a significant research project where you demonstrated leadership/analytical skills relevant to business.
👉 Ensure they can: Provide specific examples of your intellectual curiosity and academic performance that align with your MBA goals.

IV) Extracurricular Champions:
🎾 Use as a second recommender to show a different facet of your leadership or teamwork (e.g., non-profit board, major volunteer initiative).
🎾 Ensure they supervised you in that capacity and can provide concrete examples of your impact and skills (e.g., "Tanvi spearheaded a fundraising campaign that increased donations by 30%").

🤙 How to Ask?

This is where you make it easy for them to write a killer letter.

V) If you’re applying for R1 2025, schedule a call with them ASAP: Aim to make your formal request at least 6-8 weeks before the September deadlines (i.e., by late July/early August). Busy professionals need ample time to write a thoughtful letter. This also gives you buffer time if your first choice can't commit.

VI) Sensitive MBA Discussion: If you can't inform your current supervisor (a common scenario), choose another recommender, and explain this to the admissions committee in an optional essay. For your recommender, consider:
A trusted former supervisor who knows your recent work.
An indirect manager or client from your current role who has seen your work.
Someone from a significant past project or even a trusted senior colleague

VII) Provide a "Recommender Success Pack" (The 4 Essentials): Send a comprehensive email immediately after they agree with 4 essentials:
1⃣ Your Up-to-Date Resume: Highlight projects/roles they're familiar with.
2⃣ Your MBA Goals (Short & Long-term): Clearly state your target programs and why you want an MBA.
3⃣ A "Profiling" Document: List 3-5 specific projects/situations you want them to highlight. For each highlight what you did specifically, ideally with quantifiable impact. You can explicitly state 3-4 core competencies you want them to address (e.g., leadership, teamwork, analytical thinking, communication, resilience, innovation).
4⃣ School Specifics: Provide them a clear list of target schools, their exact R1 deadlines (e.g., "September 15, 2025"), and the precise submission portal instructions.

VIII) To keep them involved in the process, and get an outsider’s perspective, share your draft essays/statement of purpose with them, so they understand your narrative.

🧰 How to follow-up?

Deadlines wait for no one. Be proactive.

IX) Set Clear Deadlines & Check-ins: Politely ask your recommenders to submit their letters at least one week before the official school deadline (e.g., by September 8th for a September 15th deadline). This buffers against tech issues.

X) Follow-Up: A gentle, non-pushy email reminder 1.5-2 weeks before their agreed-upon submission date is perfectly acceptable. A polite thank-you email sent ~2 weeks before the official deadline serves as an excellent, subtle final reminder if you haven't received confirmation of submission yet.
